Loupe reads the pages you have open, works out what you meant to do with them, and writes the result into your own Google Drive. This page says exactly what is read, where it goes, and what is kept.

What Loupe reads

Your open tabs

The title and web address of pages you have open, and how you interacted with them - how long a tab was open, whether you scrolled, whether you came back to it. This is how Loupe tells a page you meant to do something about from one you glanced at.

Page text, briefly

For a page Loupe decides to file, it reads text from the page as your browser has already rendered it. It never re-fetches a page itself, so it never sees anything your browser was not already showing you. At most the first 1,500 characters are used to classify a page and 3,000 to summarise it.

The text is not kept. It is used to produce a short summary, and the summary is what is stored. The text itself is discarded.

Tabs from your other devices

If you use Chrome on a phone or tablet signed into the same Google account with tab sync turned on, Chrome already shares those tabs with your desktop. Loupe reads that list - titles and web addresses only - so something you read on your phone can be filed without any Loupe app on the phone.

The same exclusions below apply: a banking page open on your phone is ignored exactly as it would be here. If you would rather Loupe did not read them at all, turn off tab sync in Chrome on that device, or sign out of Chrome there - Loupe cannot see what Chrome does not sync.

What Loupe never reads

Where things are stored

WhatWhere it lives
Your documentsYour own Google Drive, in folders Loupe creates
Captures, summaries, reminders, settingsA database on your own computer
Your Google refresh tokenOur server, encrypted (AES-256-GCM)
Your email address, if you asked for a tab auditOur server, with the audit totals only

Most of what Loupe knows about you is on your own machine and in your own Drive. We do not hold a copy of your documents, your captures or your browsing.

Google account access

Loupe asks for the drive.file scope, and nothing broader. That scope grants access only to files the application itself creates. Loupe cannot see, open or list any other file in your Drive - including files you created, and files shared with you.

It also reads your email address and Google account identifier, to know whose Drive to write to.

If you sign in with a work or organisation account, the documents Loupe creates live in Drive that your organisation owns. Its administrators can open them, retention and discovery tools can export them, and if you leave the organisation the account and its documents go with it. Loupe tells you this when you sign in with such an account.

Who else receives data

Anthropic

Loupe uses Anthropic's models to work out what a page is for and to summarise it. Page text, titles and addresses are sent to Anthropic through our server for that purpose. This is the only place your page content leaves your machine other than into your own Drive.

Google

Documents, and only documents, are written to the Google Drive account you connect.

Slack

Only if you connect it, and only a message you have explicitly approved. Nothing is ever sent to anyone without you pressing something first.

Speech

Dictation is processed entirely on your own Mac, using Apple's on-device speech recognition. Audio is never recorded, never stored, and never sent anywhere - not to us, and not to Apple. Only the resulting text is used.

The free tab audit

If you run a tab audit before signing up, the list of tabs is classified in memory and discarded when the request finishes. Only your email address and the totals - how many tabs, how many looked unfinished - are kept. The addresses and titles are not stored at any point.

Your data

Your documents are in your own Drive. Delete them there and they are gone; Loupe cannot prevent or undo that.

The database on your computer can be deleted by removing ~/Library/Application Support/LooseEnds/, and by removing the application and the browser extension.

On our server we hold two things about you: an encrypted Google refresh token, and your email address if you left one for a tab audit. Nothing else. There are three ways to be rid of them.

What deletion does not touch, said plainly: your documents stay in your own Drive, because they are yours and we only ever had access to the files we created. The database on your computer stays there - remove ~/Library/Application Support/LooseEnds/, the app, and the extension. Server request logs may hold the bare request lines for up to 30 days; they contain no page content and no document text.

Changes

If this page changes in a way that affects what is read or where it goes, the change will be described here with its date rather than replaced silently.
